The procedure for filing a trademark in the United Arab Emirates takes from 1 to 6 months. This registration is only valid within the Emirates, not internationally.
-
Choose the trademark
Choose the trademark to be registered and verify its availability, ensuring it is not already in use by another entity. If the trademark is already in use, it will be impossible for you to register it.
-
Filing the application
The application is submitted electronically and entirely online through the Ministry of Economy’s website.
-
Approval
After a thorough examination of your application by the Ministry of Economy, you should receive approval within thirty (30) days.
Note: Any incomplete applications will be rejected. You can always appeal or modify your application.
-
Publication in local newspapers
Once your trademark registration application is approved, you must publish an announcement in the official journal and in two local Arabic newspapers – at your expense – for one day.
After publication in the newspapers, the public has thirty (30) days to challenge your trademark.
-
Trademark
registration certificate
After the thirty (30) day period, if no one has objected, you can consider your trademark as your property. The ministry will issue you a trademark registration certificate in Dubai. This certificate contains important information such as:
- The trademark registration number;
- The trade name;
- The owner’s name;
- The trademark itself;
- A description of the products and services covered by it.
Please note: A trademark is registered for a period of ten (10) years in Dubai, after which it must be renewed.
This registration is only valid within the seven (7) Emirates and not internationally.
